“My mind was certain that the Creeper was somewhere out there in the shadows, watching our house. I tried to believe it had been Brendan’s mermaid at the window, but I couldn’t. When the rain dwindled away I could hear waves breaking in the cove and the moaning of the wind under the eaves of the house. I tried hard to sleep, but it was no use, and the time passed slowly.
