“Shadow picked up on her unease and turned to look at her before giving a small whine. She automatically reached over and petted him with her free hand, keeping the other on the wheel of her vehicle as she followed Louis down a dirt path off the main road. The trip had only taken about twenty minutes, but she had the sensation she was about to enter a strange new world.
“I’m okay,” she told Shadow. She wasn’t sure who she was trying to reassure, the dog or herself. The closer she got to Loui...s’s home, the more her stomach tightened. The urge to turn around and gun it down the highway was overwhelming. But this was a chance to meet others like herself, to truly discover who she was.
