“When they returned to the mansion on Green Street, they discovered Simon had gone away for “a few days,” as Giles informed Althea.
Althea told herself it was for the best. The Lord would not suffer her to be tempted above what she was able to handle. She set herself to work, resuming her lessons with the kitchen maids, preparing the Bible studies and entertaining Rebecca. Taking advantage of the beautiful spring weather, she took Rebecca out for a drive in the coach every afternoon.
On the thir...d day after Simon’s departure, Rebecca complained of a sore throat at bedtime. By midnight she was thrashing in bed, her forehead burning to the touch.
Althea spent the remainder of the night applying cold compresses, praying and pacing. By dawn, she summoned the physician. Althea was livid with anger when he didn’t arrive until several hours later, the typical society doctor who would do nothing to disturb himself. He felt Rebecca’s pulse, took her temperature, bled her, administered a sleeping draft, and pronounced a fever and ague.MoreLess
