“‘All it needed was a touch.’ Another Monday morning and I was still mad as hell over Saturday’s match. If Seanie had put away the chance I made for him we’d at least have scraped a draw. In front of an open goal he’d duffed it because, as usual, he was too casual. When he shrugged his shoulders after the ball fizzled wide, I could have buried him. We were down behind the rockery in the ‘secret garden’, four... of us. Or three of us. Johnny Regan skulked a little way off, smoking his dope, with his ear cocked – waiting for his chance.
When I looked at Johnny, I felt sick – sick with myself. This past year, since Johnny got into the drugs, I’d been protecting Beano from him.
