“Zach, A.J.’s brother-in-law, asked the question in a strained but controlled voice as he stood in the vestibule of A.J.’s home later that evening. After listening to A.J. and Vic recount what they’d done after leaving the hospital, he tapped his foot against the hardwood floor, sucked his teeth, and waited for an answer.
