“Simon’s mother had been absent from luncheon and all day after the engagement “announcement,” leaving her remaining guests to fend for themselves. When she finally resurfaced at supper the night before, she had hardly said two words and only picked at her food.
Lillian had held on to some hope that a new day would perhaps improve the duchess’s mood.
