“On her coffee table sat a vase of flowers, the petals brown and shriveled. Gator wondered who had sent them to her, but there was no card so he had no way of knowing for certain. He wondered if they were from her doctor pal. Just thinking about it left a bad taste in his mouth. Her kitchen was as warm and cheerful as his mother’s, with brightly painted wicker baskets adorning one wall and another devoted to gleaming copper cookware.
