‘I haven’t seen you all day. Where have you been?’ ‘I don’t know why you’re doing it. Every room in this house is being changed… I don’t understand. This was meant to be a holiday for you.’ Sylvie pushed her glasses up with a finger and went into her room.

‘Well, I’ve never seen it look quite like this, I guess.’ Baseema looked around at her efforts, tried to see how clean the windows were, how shiny the tiled floor of the bedroom and the look of the white tablecloth on the round table in the window, the crystal vase of fresh-cut roses, the light clear in the water, pale green stems.
