“That connection came later with his marriage. Until he became Warwick he will be referred to here as Richard, the baptismal name that he shares with his father. Yet only half a dozen facts are recorded about the first twenty years of his life. Very little, in particular, can be known about the upbringing that prepared him for his remarkable career, though we may presume it followed the conventional course sketched out for others of his class.
