As he splashed bourbon into a glass, he heard his mother say, "Where have you been?" He turned toward her voice. She was sitting in her chair before the fireplace, wearing a white gown and a diamond necklace. Rix poured his drink and took a long swallow of it.
    "Where have you been?" she asked again. "Off the estate?" "I was driving around." "Driving around where?" "Here and there. Who are Dad's visitors?"
