She’d slept well, and hadn’t given being alone in the casita one thought.
She pushed the door wide, her tank top riding high above the plaid boxer shorts she’d taken from Zeke’s drawer. The soft, pre-dawn haze she’d come to love in the desert clung to every tree and gave the estate a mystical feel.
Two empty bowls stood on the doorstep, and she grinned. The only predator she’d had last night was her black cat. She bent down to pick up the bowls. The food bowl had been licked clean, and probably
... two or three times; maybe her cat had invited a few buddies. She heard a rustle, put the bowls down and searched the shrubs.
“Kitty-kitty,” she called softly. Maybe she’d go in and get some more food. “Here kitty-kitty.”
She straightened and saw a flash of a dark shape disappear into the trees beyond the casita. Was it human or animal?
Her legs felt wobbly but she kept her eyes on that spot, almost didn’t blink for a full minute. Had the rustling in the shrubs been the noise of someone watching the casita and making a quick exit?
