“He actually stopped in the store before he realized what he was doing. He couldn’t let himself go backward, and yet at the same time he needed something to dull the pain he felt right now.
He hadn’t wanted to hurt Penny or leave them both in this position, where there was no step forward and no way to go back.
He stood there in front of the whiskey display, trying to make himself leave, but he didn’t want to. Sweet oblivion beckoned and all he had to do was reach out and pick up the bot...tle. He lifted his hand.
“Will?”
He glanced over his shoulder and saw Elizabeth standing at the end of the aisle. She gave him a tentative smile. He dropped his arm and walked over to where she was. Pretending he was okay. Faking it the best he could until he was alone. That was too damned close.
“Hi, Elizabeth.”
