“I'd taken a shower at Theo's and made myself look as presentable as possible, and Hugh seemed to buy it. He'd finished one of his canvases, and was loading it in the trunk of the Mazda. I busied myself with my new chore duty, trying to come up with a good way of approaching Jenna about the necklace. When I went downstairs later, she was standing by the back door, looking outside. The air conditioning was finally fixed, and it was cool and dark downstairs, a welcome change from the steam bath it... had been. "I need to talk to you," I said abruptly. I heard the thrum of a plane overhead. She turned around and looked at me. Her eyes were hazy at first, like she was looking through me. Then her eyes came into focus. "What made you so scared at the lake?" I inquired. No more sugar coating or going about it the cautious way. "What are you talking about?" I wanted to tell her to sit down, that it was bad news.
