“The two women were early enough and the evening pleasant enough that Cynthia asked to walk through the park before they went inside. It had been a while since she’d spent time there and this had been one of her favorite places when she was in college, after the Reed campus itself.

Old churches flanked the green space as well as the Art Museum, Portland State University, the Historical Society, and the Performing Arts complex. For Cynthia, it was the real heart of the city, the place where she found a sense of peace and purpose.
