The Second World War played out in massive swells through the Sahara, what the British described as “Big Pours”—an ironic reference to a place where water never flows. He had read biographies of Rommel and General Charles “Chinese” Gordon, the British officer and explorer whose search for Noah’s Ark took him to the ends of the continent.
