“We flailed in the dark, both reaching in odd directions for the sound. I answered.
“April?” said a woman’s voice.
“Yes?” Night panic made my heart pound. It was 2:12 on my digital clock radio.
“I know what you’re up to,” said the voice.
I slammed down the phone. Dwight moved his legs over mine. The phone rang again. Sitting up now, blinking myopically, Dwight said, “Don’t answer it.” After a few rings I did. What if I had misunderstood the first time? What if this was the hospit...al calling about his parents?
“Who is it?” I said as I answered.
“Bernice Graves’s real daughter,” came the response, “so fuck off.”
“Excuse me?” I said. I shrugged at Dwight who was saying, “Hang up the phone. Hang up the phone.”
