Guyian says:
Extraordinary novel. "The woman upstairs" is a complex, angry, often thwarted woman, a frustrated aspiring artist who turned to the practicality of elementary school teaching instead of pursuit of a career in art. Eventually, she fell in love, but not with a partner, male or female ... but with a nuclear family. I was reminded of Carson McCullers's Frankie in "The Member of the Wedding" thinking she had found "the we of me" in her older brother and his fiancée. The most import
...ant relationship is between Nora and the wife (an artist - oh, what a tangled web) in her beloved family-as-love-object, but the son and father are also indispensable to the narrative. Messud's writing is exquisite - stylish, intriguing, sometimes disturbing. Ultimately, this book is devastating.
Zangkin says:
I like this writer and she choose and interesting subject and protagonist. The book almost written like a diary from the point of view of someone who feels that they have been deeply wronged and jilted. The protagonist is an elementary school teacher who has dreams of reviving her life as an artist and her relationship with a family unit (father, mother, son). It is really well done- Messud deals with the grey areas and complexities of relationships.
