Swinton’s book-room with its rows of bookshelves and comfortable chairs. Not, she had to own, for the reason Vanessa would have enjoyed it, for Eveline did not share her friend’s delight in reading. She had chosen this room because it was deserted. Mr. Swinton’s guests were engrossed in card games or had already retired.
