The rain pelting the windows and the gurgling of the coffee machine were the only sounds in the kitchen. At last, he stood and took his plate to the sink, then left the room with his cup and book. Some of the tension ebbed ...away once he’d gone, and she sank into one of the rickety kitchen chairs while she waited for the coffee to brew. She didn’t like this new animosity between them.
