Very well written and researched book covering about forty years of recent American history. It tells about the changes in the lives of different people, including a black female community activist, a Midwestern entrepreneur, and a Wall Street lawyer who for idealistic reasons takes on the position as a political aid and actually ends up working in the White House during the Clinton administration. What I especially liked is that the... book clearly lays out the division between the American we-will-do-it-ourselves mentality and the idea which is more common in Europe, that the government is here to solve our problems.

While I agree with the author that organized money has been indisputably bad for the majority of Americans I don't believe that the American "zenith" was the 1950's/1960's with a large and growing blue-collar labor force. I think the reality is more nuanced than a morality tale with evil bankers/rich people on one side and the poor, innocent masses on the other. Globalization, technology and many other external factors played an equally if not more important role in the societal changes of the past 50 years and these are mostly ignored.The character portraits were interesting and well-written but I don't think a selected set of individual biographies effectively conveys the Author's thesis.MoreLess
