“The stream of human traffic was surging, and the noise made it difficult to hold a conversation. Élodie moved so impossibly fast that I could not match her pace.
‘You look good, Lawrence,’ she said. ‘But you neglected one detail. Possibly the most important of them all.’ Before I could ask what that detail might be, she had approached the entrance to a nondescript boutique hidden beneath red awnings and potted shrubbery. The windows showed perfume bottles, which I could easily have mistaken for... a gallery display. They were up against a piece of mirrored glass, which made them appear to stretch into infinity.
‘Are you suggesting what I think you are?’ I said as she was about to enter the shop.
