“I get the feeling that she might give me a shove into the bank of lockers, and I get ready to jump out of the way. But instead of shoving, she starts talking. “So my parents are obsessed with how Mr. McCabe is. How did he seem? How did he seem?” she chirps in a voice that’s got to be her mother’s. “Like I’m a goddamned psychiatrist. What do they want me to say?” I eye her, not sure how to respond.
