They had left the parlor and library lights blazing, and a nearly full moon overhead bathed the hill in a soft, silvery glow. The wind had gone to sleep, allowing the oak branches overhead to form a peaceful, protective canopy. Nothing about the place seemed frightening

If I could paint, Jess thought as they made their way up the hill, I would paint what I’m looking at now. I’d make it all silver and black and gold and I’d make it romantic, like this night.
“Feel like sitting outside for a while?” Ian asked. “Till the rest of the crew gets home?”
“Great idea, but I’ll have to run in and get a jacket. It’s cold out here.”
“I’ll get it. Tell me where.”
Jess sat down on the top porch step. “In my room, on the floor. The blue denim jacket.”
