“THE POUNDING on the door was insistent, and the woman’s voice was loud. “Tess, are you awake?”
Tess stumbled toward the noise, tugging the sash of her robe closed. She hadn’t slept much last night, not after Jude left.
And, of course, he had left. Even after that kiss, which had been beyond description. He’d walked away without anger, but also without hesitation.
The ache of watching him leave had taken her by surprise. She hadn’t wanted to stop with one kiss. She’d wanted to go on kissing him. She’d wanted to take him to her bedroom and make love to him.
Realizing how ready she’d been to abandon all inhibition was more than a surprise—it was a true, unsettling shock. She didn’t do things like that. She’d known him only a couple of weeks. She didn’t have casual sex.
That was what had kept her tossing and turning all night.
She pulled open the door to find Penny.
