I wish it would stop raining, she thought. I need to get to Daddy’s office. Mom won’t ever let me out in this flood. If the bookmark key fits in the wall map of Mr. Johnson’s study, I’ll find out what’s behind the keyhole. Maybe I’ll have good news for Tina.
She heard the phone ringing downstairs. “Jessie,” called her mother. “Telephone.”
“I’ll get it up here.” She ran to her parents’ bedroom and picked up the receiver.
“Hello?”
“Jessica, this is Miss Tyler at the library.”
“Oh, hi, Miss Tyler.
...
“I’ve located some photographs in the clipping file. I think you might find them interesting. If you wish to look at them, you may pick them up at the front desk. But, remember, do not remove these materials from the library.”
“No, Miss Tyler. I won’t. Thank you for finding them.”
“You’re welcome. We’re here to help, Jessica. Goodbye.”
Jessie replaced the receiver, just as her mother entered the bedroom, crossed to the closet and took a navy blue raincoat from its hanger.
