“Before dawn mist rose in the meadows as the soft, languid air drifted over fields and riverbanks. The sudden heat, so unexpected and so welcome at this time of year, caused people to rise from their beds and throw open their windows and doors. Some residents went into their own backyards sometime after midnight; they brought out pillows and blankets and slept beneath the stars, as disoriented as they were delighted by the sudden change in weather.
