He was standing at the corner of London Fields, smoking a cigarette. He was unshaven and dishevelled and I felt that there was something rather furtive about the look that he gave me.
    He turned away, glancing at me out of the corner of his eye, and gave a little wave, the sort of wave you give when you hope somebody will not stop, but just go on their way. I was about to do this, starting to cross the road, when something made me change my mind and go on up to him.
    ‘We haven’t seen you
...for a long time, Jim,’ I said cheerily.
    ‘I’m sorry,’ he mumbled, ‘been rather busy.’ I couldn’t think of any word less appropriate to Jim’s daily life than this.
    ‘No need to apologise,’ I said. ‘Do come along one Sunday if you have time.’ ‘Thanks, Richard, but I don’t think I’ll come. You see, I’ve been thinking about it all, and I’ve decided … it’s all superstition, all this religious stuff, just like not walking under ladders.
