If this were the case, then I was, in my role as her gentleman caller, Charbuque, being summoned to a tryst away from the purview of Watkin. The only question that remained was whether I was the Charbuque she was falling in love with or the Charbuque she believed had betrayed her. Not knowing which man I was, I could not be sure which woman she would be.
