Jil ian leaned across the table; I could hear her smiling at me. “Congratulations.” I continued working on my formula, not bothering to look at her. “You have to match me.” She sounded annoyed. “Why would I have to match?” Now I was annoyed. “Because you are my escort.” She rested her face in her hand. “I’m taking Gia to the dance.” I stared at her. She looked at her fingernail polish, stil annoyed. “Whatever. But on the float, and when we are announced at the dance, you are my escort.” She spoke as though she was explaining it to a four-year-old. “I thought Mason could escort you. I could escort Courtney.” It’s not like it mattered who was whose escort; it would only be one dance. She scowled at me. “No, Mrs. Hendricks assigned us, mostly by height, but she said we couldn’t change. Mason is escorting Courtney, you are escorting me, and my dress is olive green.” She final y turned to her work. It looked as though Alex and Kiarah hadn’t made up yet when we al assembled at lunch.
