A major trunk road had been driven through the resited village in the sixties and a concrete footbridge erected to enable the people who lived there to move from one part of the village to the other. But first one half of Coldside withered and died, and then the villagers from the other side eventually either died or moved away. Jackie could see the ribbon of road from the slope that rose up at the back of Ronnie’s house. In another month or so the road would be screened by the trees, which also helped to muffle the drone of the traffic. But it wasn’t yet May, and the trees were just coming into leaf.
