“The winds of all the world blew about it, and seas marched three-quarters of the way around the globe to hurl themselves thunderously against its cliffs. Usually there was a cloud of sea-birds fluttering above some part of it: always there was gray vapor from a hundred-acre spot where warm mineral springs made foul smells and harsh colorings in the mud.
