“It felt safe, solid. The whole world seemed to be falling apart outside, with roads being ruptured by blasts of fire and strange people throwing cars and doing impossible things all around her; but now she felt like it was a whole other world away, somewhere out there.
The darkness wasn’t absolute. As her eyes adjusted, she could see Dan’s outline, listening for pursuit. He seemed calm. Her own breathing was erratic and she concentrated on bringing it under control, but it was hopeless. Her... tai chi instructor never taught her how to bring about calm in such a crazy situation.
