“They stood outside the hotel, Mal leaning on his crutches as the cab driver loaded Amy’s bags into the boot of the taxi. “Yep,” Mal said. “It’s been fun.”
“It has.”
She tried to smile, but Mal could see she was having trouble maintaining a bright expression. “Promise you’ll give me a ring when you get home safely?”
“I will,” she said. “I have your number.”
“Perfect. Do you have your ticket? And your passport.”
“Yes. I’m going to kiss you one more time and then I’m going to get in the cab and leave.”
“All right,” Mal said. He slipped his arm around her waist and pulled her against him. Their lips met, and as it had always been between them, the kiss was perfect, soft and sweet and filled with unexpressed longing.
Mal fought the urge to drag her back upstairs and convince her to stay.
