“The order from the Popular Army’s chiefs of staff calling him back to the city had arrived at the camp a week after Caridad’s visit to him in the Sierra de Guadarrama. Full of doubts and weighed down with a good dose of shame, Ramón had taken leave of his company members and, his clothing covered with mud, stepped onto the military transport that evacuated the wounded from the front.
