“Mattie was determined to live out the rest of her life in this place, and it wasn’t going to happen. The old woman couldn’t take care of herself any better than a two-year-old. She could feed herself, but he wouldn’t trust her in the kitchen. That meant someone had to fix her meals and clean up after her. She couldn’t make her own bed, she couldn’t clean out the litter box, but she could bitch if the litter box smelled. And it always did.
As he washed up after breakfast the next morning, he had... a feeling that Mattie would end up back in the nursing home, because although her arm had healed, her mind was steadily slipping. Most people mellowed as they aged, but this woman was going in the opposite direction. And Jenna ended up taking the brunt of her temper.
