“In fact, we even get into another little fight.
It happens when Gayle and I are watching cartoons in our pajamas on Saturday morning. Liat rings the doorbell. We let her in and she sighs, “You guys watch so much TV.”
“So?” I ask.
“So,” Liat answers, “why don’t you do something instead?”
“Watching TV is doing something,” I reply.
Liat shakes her head. “Watching TV is doing nothing.”
“It’s not nothing!” I say, my voice rising. “TV is great! TV is better than real life! On TV things are the way th...ey’re supposed to be! On TV the bad guys always get beaten up!”
I don’t mean to say these things—or to say them in such a loud, angry way—but they describe exactly how I feel.
Silence falls. Liat says nothing. Gayle says nothing. I say nothing.
Finally, after what feels like hours, Liat says, “Rivka has the day off today. She wants to know if you want makeovers.”
“Makeovers?” I ask, perking up.
“Yeah, she can do them at my house.”
