The Husband Project (2013)

He’d sneaked down to the basement, a dark and menacing place with spiders, while his grandmother cooked pancakes upstairs.     He discarded big square pans of macaroni and cheese as options—his mother labeled everything neatly with black marker and tape—and quarts of chili. He debated over the chicken pot pies, since he’d already delivered one of those to Sam. There were no more small plastic boxes with Grandma’s meatballs, though. Unless he could get into Grandma’s freezer the next time they were over at her house, Sam wasn’t going to get meatballs again anytime soon.     And the meatballs were the best. Davey thought he should get bonus points for giving those to a neighbor who was hurt and didn’t have a car.     Uh-huh. Something to talk to Mrs. Kramer about when school started again.     He carefully moved frozen pies to one side and sifted through bags of berries and vegetables.     “You’re gonna fall in.”
