“I arrived as bidden, despite feeling sick, something heavy pressing me down, a cold, the flu coming on. The temperature had dropped, and I was chilled walking across the parking lot and into the restaurant. Busier inside than I could handle. I barely saw the hostess, just pushed past her. Ruddik occupied a booth opposite the bar. He told me I didn’t look good, as if me looking good was important. He was drinking a lime margarita on the rocks. Virgin, he assured me. I ordered a tomato juice, cra...ving vitamin C.
When the waitress left, he slid back to the corner of the booth and stretched out to get comfortable.
“Sorry I wasn’t in touch before. They’re monitoring my e-mail and my phone calls.”
“Who’s they?”
He didn’t bother to answer.
“Is it true about the pornography?”
“Of course it’s not true.” There was anger in the abrupt reply. “Two years ago I was investigating an Internet child porn ring based out of a penitentiary in Tennessee.”
The waitress returned with my drink and a basket of nacho chips.MoreLess
