Brandon says:
It was nice to read something by Steven Erikson. The beginning of a new trilogy, I found it familiar territory, with philosphy, dark humor, and gritty action all rolled up into an epic story. As with Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series, this one has several long, boring passages where people philosphize, and dozens of parts where momentous things are happening but I was not quite sure exactly what it was. This is part of the spell of reading a book by Erikson, and although I
... confess to skipping a few dozen pages here and there, the book still felt like a reunion with an old friend.
vhenlon says:
A heavy, dense book. It rewards careful reading, and I'm sure I missed things in it. The characters are good, the writing strong, and the plot interesting. Some of the passages are a bit long winded or overdone, but, overall, well worth the read. Some questions answered, many others raised. I can't quite figure out how it connects into the world as we see it in the Malazan books, but I suspect that will develop over the course of the next two books in this series.

I love these books starting with The Book of the Fallen by Erikson. But I wish that you could see all the words. For some reason I can't see the last word(s) at the end of each line.
