THE EXECUTIONER’S SONG SO BEGAN the third act of the fight. Not often was there a better end to a second act than Foreman’s failure to destroy Ali on the ropes. But the last scenes would present another problem. How was the final curtain to be found? For if Foreman was exhausted, Ali was weary. He had hit Foreman harder than he had ever hit anyone. He had hit him often. Foreman’s head must by now be equal to a piece of vulcanized rubber. Conceivably you could beat on him all night and nothing more would happen. There is a threshold to the knockout. When it comes close but is not crossed, then a man can stagger around the ring forever. He has received his terrible message and he is still standing. No more of the same woe can destroy him. He is like the victim in a dreadful marriage which no one knows how to end. So Ali was obliged to produce still one more surprise. If not, the unhappiest threat would present itself as he and Foreman stumbled through the remaining rounds. There is agon...y to elucidate even a small sense of the aesthetic out of boxing.MoreLess

No Norman you are wrong. The penholder grip is the most antiquated grip, although in more recent years it was revived by the very agile Chinese and Japanese. To kill a ball with a penholder grip on the backhand (this grip uses on a single face all the time) one must contort and twist his body, from the feet through the waist , to the shoulders and then the arm, so as to make sure that the ball stays on the table and does not fly away wide.

One advantage is that because of the contorted way it has to be played, htere is a strong slice or cross pull on the ball which causes it to curve in mid air, and make it's eventual landing spot on the table uncertain. And it will still be spinning when the opponent hits it back, which requires a different skill.

however, today's especially concocted rubber, on the faces of the bats are made so that they impart their own very special kind of response, spin, drag, slide etc. A top class player need to know the name, model and property of every bat on the market do that he can adapt his play to it.

takes away all the real sport and enjoyment of playing that we used to have. I myself wwas a tournament standard player for many years with many minor trophies, close to my country's international level and playing-and often beating- those international in tournaments. My game was ruined when the new "funny rubber" it was called) bats became standard. I got one which was a "dead" bat, that negated most or all of the effects of the funny rubber, but..it made a sharp attacking stroke much slower and less effective. in essence it was a defensive bat, and countered very heavy topspin easily. Ny tactics were to simulate a heavy "chop" or backspin in my defensive stroke, which, because it really was a bogus act, caused the opponent to lift his return stroke far too much and off the table. I beat many young champions that way even when more than twice their age. i played at this level until I was past 60.

King murdered two men. The numbers runner (who owed him $500) he stamped and kicked to death weighed 115 lbs, very undersized and weak. King is 6'6" and weighs about 280 lbs. The earlier murder was one in which he shot an intruder in the back, He was freed by bought, threatened and perjured witnesses.
