ers did as well. This was the first time for my husband and as it had been so long for me, it was a fun experience for us to share together.

Also, the movies hadn’t come out when I listened before. Since they were so well-done (IMHO) I enjoyed thinking of the actors as each of the characters in the Fellowship, especially Sam, my favorite and Gimli a close second. The breathtaking scenery where the movies were filmed was so majestic, I had already surrendered my own imaginary ones years ago. They just couldn’t compete, which isn’t usually the case for me in the books v. movie debate. Normally if I have read a book first, I prefer to hang on to my own mental picture(s) of things.

Of course there was much left out of the movies which the book filled in. That’s to be expected. In this case it reminded me of one of those detailed Dover coloring book pages. You enjoy studying the black-and-white image, but the scene really comes alive when your colored pencils or crayons fill all the empty space.

Enjoyed this so very much. The only downer, we are 1/3 of the way done. Sadness. On to The Two Towers! Happiness!

5.0 stars. I just re-read this book as it has been a LONG time since I first read it and was curious about how well it would hold up over time. The answer is... AMAZINGLY WELL. I was actually a bit surprised at just how good this book is as it is very easy to be disappointed when you read the "consensus" standard of any genre. Well this series not only IS the standard, but it DESERVES to be the standard of epic fantasy. I am looking forward to re-reading the next two books in the trilogy.
