“His father (Percy James Kent-Smith) came from Pimlico, London, and was an acting petty officer in the Royal Navy. Unfortunately McCoy never met him. Within six weeks of meeting his Irish mother, Molly Sheridan (which included a two-week honeymoon in Ayrshire), he was blown up in a submarine in the Mediterranean. McCoy’s father was only 23 years old when killed and his mother never recovered from the trauma, receiving medication for the rest of her life as a consequence and, as McCoy would later say, spending a lot of her life in an institute for the emotionally distraught. He spent his formative years being raised by his mother, grandmother and aunts, and he attended St Mun’s, a local Dunoon school. McCoy never started out with the intention of being an actor. His first vocation was the priesthood.
