“Afternoon,”
said the man at the glass-topped counter as he looked up from his copy of the Times. “How’ve you been, Marie?”
She smiled. “I’m good, Jasper. You?”
He shrugged. “All right, I suppose.”
Marie had answered his question automatically, not realizing she was lying. She was hardly good. She had spent much of her time the last few days either terribly angry or terribly worried, often both at the same time.
