All activity on the patio at Nutmeg Hill immediately ceased at the remark. Rocco looked sheepish in his tall chef’s hat and emblazoned apron as his barbecue fork froze in midair. His wife, Martha Herbert, flushed, but continued plucking silk strands from husked corn. Bea Wentworth fought back a rising laugh and waited with curiosity for Lyon’s response to fourteen-year-old Remley Herbert’s remark.
Lyon flipped the marinating flank steak and smiled at the young girl. “I think people ...write what they can and what they believe in. You like to read those thick historical romances. I don’t and therefore couldn’t write a very good one. Do you see what I mean? Does that make sense?”
“Yes, it does, but there’s not much social significance to your treacly monsters.”
“The Wobblies have causes of their own.”
“They just seem to run around the countryside with their tongues out. They’re not very real.”
