“The year was 1954, and it was August, and it was broiling hot. Anthony was fourteen years old, with a thin, pinched face, and a long pointed nose. He was tall, skinny, and muscular, and today he was wearing cutoff jeans and sneakers and an old soiled white T-shirt. He was also wearing a red leather cap with a scrunched peak.
