The driver stopped the chaise just short of the patient line of carriages waiting to discharge their passengers and called down, ‘Do you want me to go on, guv? It’ll be an hour or more afore you get to the door.’ Adam looked at Maryanne, huddled in the corner of the carriage. ‘Well?’ ‘No, no, I cannot be seen in public like this; it would be too mortifying.’ He understood her reluctance. Three days on the road staying in rudimentary accommodation and with only one change of clothes had left her looking exhausted and bedraggled and she was in no state to pass off her predicament with any degree of confidence. And it would need more than confidence, it would need defiance to explain away leaving home so suddenly and travelling for three days alone with a man who was not her husband. He had pretended to be her guardian when they had stopped for the night, but that had fooled no one and she had been only too aware of the smirks of the inn servants when they thought she wasn’t looking.
