The Boys in the Boat will make you proud of the competitive 1936 American rowing team. Readers will appreciate the Olympic spirit in a bygone era before amateur sports morphed into a commercialized industry. The book is laid out in a series of chronological events interspersed with recreated conversations and backstory. The cruel and tragic story of the persecution and systematic murder of Jews and other "undesirables" unfolding while the world chooses to ignore the crimes against hum
...anity makes an eerie backdrop.

This is a must read for all you parents and grandparents who would like a real-life teaching opportunity for your children and grandchildren. What is the lesson? How to find your niche in the world and succeed, armed with little more than desire, drive, and determination. Joe Rantz, one of the nine Americans going for Olympic Gold in 1936 Berlin, competing in the crewing event, was essentially abandoned as a teenager and yet made his way to university and Olympic glory. Many of his crew mates were no better off, financially, as they competed against Ivy League schools and then against world-class athletes from across the world, scrimping and saving, working several blue-collar jobs while training and attending classes. Granted, the economic times were different in the early '30s than today, but reading about the obstacles Joe and his mates faced just to get the privilege to be part of the team was head-shaking wonderment from one chapter to the next.. Thanks to my family from the Northwest for recommending this Goodread..
