“The river was high from recent rains; driftwood splintered on rocks and tore at thorny brambles on the banks: loud, scratching noises that kept their infant, Harry, awake and crying. The ferry captain told them he’d try to cross at dawn, but if the water rose while they slept, they might have to wait a couple of days until the stream calmed.
