“His empty bed. He came wide awake instantly, though it took him a second or two longer to process why he’d been so alarmed when sleeping alone was the norm for him. His subconscious had already adapted to having Elena by his side. Except, at the moment, she wasn’t.He looked to the bathroom, but no light shone.
