Frank Stevens had the ability to interview surviving Black Hawk War participators and descendants for his 1903 work. As such, his prose reflects a modest pro-settler bias. However, Stevens knits a tangled tale of stories assembled (somewhat without any system) into a rare and valuable work on the Sauk War of 1832. Of particular value are side stories, reports, and insights rarely found or cited in modern works covering the same topic.
